During the December 8th Holiday Hop, the Learned Owl is delighted to host author Barb Youel. She will be on hand to talk about her cookbook titled “First Serve: 40 Delicious Plant-Based Recipes for a Year of Tennis Grand Slams and Club Matches”. Filled with delicious recipes and lovely color photographs, the book makes a great gift for the athletes and foodies on your list.
Ms. Youel, a member at Towpath Tennis and tennis player since 2001, wrote the cookbook after meeting with Dr. Esselstyn (author of “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure”) and noticing what friends were eating after matches at the Towpath Tennis Center. In an effort to encourage friends to consider healthier foods, she researched the benefits of plant-based eating and wrote the cookbook.
She hopes that the recipes will be so inviting that no one will realize how healthy they are! Included in the book are special tips and a list of resources for where to shop both locally and regionally.
Youel is a self-taught plant-based cook and USTA league tennis player at Towpath Tennis Center in Akron. She is also a runner, writer, and educator who learned her PhD in American Studies from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. After graduating from Kent State in 1970, she taught secondary English and worked with gifted students in the Berea City Schools. She later taught as an adjunct faculty member at Cleveland State. Lean Green Living LLC was created to promote a healthy, plant-based lifestyle. She shares her home with Malcolm and felines Ming, Ava Rose and Flash.
The Learned Owl, established in 1968, is an independent bookstore stocked with three floors of books for all ages. Be sure to talk to them about their reading recommendations and your new favorites.
