The Learned Owl is pleased to feature Hudson artist Cyndi Duncan and her altered books during the June Art Hop.
Cyndi Duncan founded and published Altered Arts magazine from 2004 – 2014. She is a self-taught mixed media artist and instructor who teaches classes around the country. Her work has been featured in the pages of Altered Arts as well as in the trade show displays of various craft supply manufacturers. Cyndi loves to create art, but her passion is to share her creativity with others through the classes and workshops she offers.
An altered book is simply a different kind of canvas for the visual artist. Instead of using a canvas as the surface onto which to apply paint or collage materials, the altered book artist uses the pages of a book. Typically the book is a standard tome, full of the written word. It can also be a blank or lined journal, as well. Into this unusual substrate, the altered book artist can add a variety of elements typically not found in canvas bound works of art such as: windows, doors, moving elements, niches, pockets and drawers. Considering that many books are thrown away every day, the altered book artist is also providing a valuable service by repurposing items often destined for the landfill.
